Low cost carrier GoAir of India, which has become only the second Indian airliner to report back-to-back profits for two consecutive years along with IndiGo, has taken a major initiative to cut the hand baggage allowance from 10 kg to 7 kg from June 1, 2014. Before this announcement, this was the only Indian LCC to offer more than 7 kgs of hand luggage as free allowance. With this move, the airline will be diluting one of its main USPs but, at the same time, it will also help it to improve the fuel efficiency and hence operational efficiency. It is to be noted that GoAir reports the highest load factor of more than 81 percent amongst Indian carriers which means that it flies with the highest levels of occupancy.
It is also to be noted that this cut on GoAir hand baggage follows closely on cut in check in baggage allowance as well. It allows to check-in 15 kgs on GoSmart and GoFlexi and 35 kgs on Gobusiness. From Srinagar, Jammu and Leh, these restrictions are 22 kgs and 42 kgs respectively on these booking classes.
GoAir is also planning to increasing its capacity by 21% in this fiscal year, offering 8.5 million seats in this year. Currently, it operates with a fleet of 19 aircraft and reaches 21 destinations.Beginning 2016 and up to 2020, it is also expected to receive delivery of 72 NEO Airbus aircraft which are more fuel efficient, operate over a longer range and reduce the noise pollution considerably.
