Preferential Seating and Excess Baggage Charges of Indigo Airlines

August 14, 2014

When DGCA, the Indian aviation regulator, permitted the commercial airlines to charge fees for unbundled services in May 2013, it was a chance pounced upon by the carriers for reducing the checked in baggage allowances and putting up the charges for extra weight luggage as well as for putting a price for preferential seats. Indigo is the first airline to put the charge for preferential seating after this directive from DGCA.

How much does selecting a seat in Indigo Airlines costs? This depends on which plane you are flying it, whether it is an ATR plane, A-320 (180 seater), A320 (186 seater), A 321 (222 seater) and A321 (232 seater). If the seats is selected using the Indigo call center, then extra 10% charges are levied.

I am traveling from doha to amritsar .i have total 30 kg check in baggage.is that applicable same to delhi to asr. or any charge taken by airline.,????

    • baggagematters

      Posted on July 12, 2017

If it is another airline for Delhi to ASR route, then you will have to pay charges. Even if it is Indigo but you are not flying on connected segment provided by the airline, you will have to pay for it. If you have booked a connecting flight, then there is no problem.

15 kg check in allowance and 7 kg cabin allowance per adult or child passsenger is allowed on domestic flights of Indigo. You can always choose the seats of your choice, if available, during the check-in process either at airport or using the Web check in process of Indigo. However, certain rows of seats and the window/aisle seats have preferential charges as well.

    • baggagematters

      Posted on June 20, 2016

Earlier Indigo did not allow pre-paid excess baggage slabs to be bought by passengers boarding ex-Dubai. However, we have spoken to the airline and they say that up to 10 kg can be bought as pre-paid excess baggage. AED 60 per excess kg is the cost otherwise. PLease speak to local Indigo Airline office and tell that you want to buy a pre-paid slab of 10 kg excess baggage and will pay for rest at per kg rate at the airport.
One more thing, since you are three people, each of you can book 10 kg pre-paid slab in name of each one of you.

Baggage allowance for Indigo is 15 kg check in and 7 kg cabin allowance. Now, if you want to club your check-in bags, this is permitted but weight of one check in bag shall not be more than 32 kgs. You will have to pay for excess baggage as well.

Please note that pre-paid discounted slabs of excess weight are not available for ex-Dubai flights, so you will have to pay at a per kg rate in AED terms at airport while coming from there and bringing more check in baggage than what is normally allowed.

You can buy a slab of 15 kg at pre-defined slab rate of Rs 2250 at least 6 hours before flight online or by calling the customer service of the airline and, for the remaining 1 kg, they can pay at check in counter.

    1. I want to know the baggage allowance carry on and checin for my infant( lap child).
    2. Our pnr is same for 3 adults and infant. If I have to buy prepaid baggage each way BOM- RAIPUR and RAIPUR – BOM. How will it work?? Can I buy 30 kg each way? Can we carry extra baggage for the prepaid baggage allowance.
    Thanks!!

    • baggagematters

      Posted on December 8, 2015

Infant would be allowed only cabin allowance of 1 bag of 7 kg. For every adult or child more than 2 years of age, the allowance is 15kg check in and 7 kg cabin baggage. So, a total of 45 kg free check in baggage will be permitted for 3 adults. If you are carrying more than it, then you have two options- either book a pre-paid slab of excess weight or pay it upfront at the airport during check in. You can buy pre-paid slab each way. Of course, you will carry extra baggage for the pre-paid slab of excess weight.

You will be allowed 15 kg check in baggage and 7 kg cabin baggage for Indigo flight within India. Excess 5 kg can be paid for at the airport itself at rate of Rs 250 per kg or you can pay by buying a pre-paid slab of 5 kg for Rs 1000 online or on phone.

Thats right. Since the international flight has been on Indigo and the connecting domestic flight is also provided by it, you will be allowed a check in allowance of 20kg. But, if was some other carrier operating the international leg of journey, you would have been allowed only 15 kg check in allowance, not 20 kg.

Yes, they will be charged for excess baggage. Best option is to buy a pre-paid slab online since it would come at a discount. Slabs can be bought for each passenger. If they are carrying 30 kg each, then 15 kg per person is excess baggage which needs to be paid for. A 15 kg slab per person shall be bought. How much baggage allowance you will provide to me? Can I bring two bags for Check in? If I will not bring Cabin Bag, the Check in Bag Limit would be 15+7? Please respond, accordingly I will print the prepaid label. Thanks

If travelling on Indigo on domestic leg of journey, allowance is only 15 kg per person. This means you have an excess of 31 kgs. You can book a pre-paid slab of Rs 3750 for 30 kgs and for the rest of 1 kg, the charges are Rs 250 per kg.

If you are ticketed on the connecting flight provided by Indigo and you are not buying a separate ticket for it, then same allowance as that of international sector would be applicable. However, if you are booking separately then extra charges will have to paid for excess 15 kgs. Pre-paid slab for 15 kgs is Rs 2250

If you have to take 50 kg excess luggage, you will be allowed to take it. You can book a pre-paid slab of 30 kg and for the rest 20 kgs you will have to pay at rate of Rs 250 per excess kg.

I am travelling with my wife who is pregnant and a 2 year old child on the 13th of November from Bhubaneswar to Kolkata. On the same day I have my Singapore Airlines international flight to Melbourne. Since the International Flight allowance is 30 Kgs + 7 Kgs, would I be allowed the same allowance for the domestic flight as I had somewhere seen that domestic flights allow the same allowance as international if the travel is within 24 hours. Also, since I have a 2year old kid and my wife is pregnant, can I checkin the Hand Baggage along with the Check in Luggage.

    • baggagematters

      Posted on November 6, 2015

No, international allowance is not allowed by Indigo airlines. This is only done by Goair and Air Costa to the limits of 46 kg max per person. Airlines generally do not allow clubbing of hand and check in luggage. But, in cases similar to yours, this might be allowed. You shall speak to airlines in advance of flight regarding this.

Since you are a pregnant women travelling with a child, IndiGo would have permitted to fly with cabin luggage being clubbed with check in luggage. However, this is done is rare cases when, as per the understanding of the airline, carrying hand baggage along with children might become unmanageable. Therefore 22+22 kg checkin luggage is allowed for you and your son.

You might not be allowed to take it because it is very over-sized. If allowed, you might be asked to pay for oversized baggage charges. This is on discretion of the airline staff at the airport. Can’t it be reduced to more manageable limits?

Hello. I am traveling from the USA to Chennai next week. We will then be taking Indigo from Chennai to Trivandrum. We are 4 adult passengers and will have a total of around 120 Kilos between the 4 of us. So if we are allowed 15 kilos per person, that is a total of 60 Kilos allowed and we will need to purchase two 30kg blocks each for the excess baggage. Please confirm if this is correct. Also, since we already purchased the Indigo ticket online, can we now purchase the pre-paid excess baggage online or does it have to be done only by calling the call center? Thanks in advance.

Free baggage allowance to/from Dubai is 30 kgs. You cannot buy pre-paid allowance since this facility is not available for ex-Dubai flights. So, excess baggage will have to be paid at the Dubai airport at rate of AED 40 per kg (=AED 400)

    Hi

I have flight from Bhubaneswar to bangalore on July 8th. Then I have connecting flight from bangalore to Frankfort .i m traveling with my daughter .i m taking 2 cabin bag , per bag 8kg. And 3 checked in bag , per bag 23 kg. As it is mentioned in the ticket that 15 kg for checked in baggage and 7 kg for cabin bag is allowed.
Then I need to know where I will pay the extra charges and how much rupees I ll pay .

    Thank you

We are assuming that you are flying Indigo from Bhubaneshwar to Bangalore. We are also assuming that your daughter is a child or adult and not an infant. In this case, you are entitled to 15 kgs per passenger of checked baggage. This means 30 kgs for checked baggage and 7+7 kgs of cabin baggage. So, excess baggage is 2 kgs of Cabin and 39 kgs of checked in luggage. So, you can pay for excess checked in baggage by buying one 30 kgs slab for Rs 3750 and one 10 kg slab for Rs 1750 (one under name of daughter and one under your own name). Cabin baggage has to be paid at rate of Rs 250 per excess kg.

No, you will have to pay for excess baggage since domestic routes only have 15 kg allowance.

I am travelling to US in Dec, I have a baggage of 23 kg 2 piece( total 46kg) as check in baggage and 1 cabin baggage of 7kg so what allowance of excess baggage should I buy.

    • admin

      Posted on June 17, 2015

In total you are carrying 46 kgs of checked in baggage while only 15 kgs is allowed free on domestic routes of IndiGo per passenger. For the remaining, 31 kgs, you can buy excess baggage slab of 30 kgs and pay for the remaining 1 kg (if you can not somehow remove it) at airport at rate of Rs 250 per kg. Pre-buy slab of 30 kgs can be had for Rs 3750. So, total will be Rs 4000.

I will be travelling on 6th June from ahmedabad to Delhi and connecting international flight to Japan.

I will have approx total 50 kg wt.

What allowance I can get for connecting international flight and how much i must pre booked

      Posted on June 4, 2015

Since you are flying Indigo on domestic sector and using another carrier for connecting flight to Japan, you will have to pay for the excess baggage for Indigo. Since only 15 kgs are allowed by indigo, rest of 35 kgs will be excess. So, you will have to buy 30 kg slab and pay for rest of 5 kgs @ Rs 250 per kg at the airport during check in.

    Hello,

I’ll be travelling with my family (total 4 members) from Bangalore to Thiruvananthapuram in July.
Since I’m travelling from USA, I will probably have 6 baggage of 20-25Kgs each. Estimating a total of 125 kgs for the 4 of us. Please advice how I can minimize the extra cost for this? Can I purchase two 30kgs extra in mine and my wife’s name?
    Thanks in advance.

Excess baggage booking is allowed on per passenger basis. So, if you are total of 4 passengers, you can divide excess baggage of approx 60-65 kgs among either the two or three or even the four of you. So, you can buy two 30 kgs extra in your and your wife’s name.

    Dear Sir/Madam,
This extra baggage booking is atleast 6 hr prior. So what i understand, at the time of booking ticket i can do that. Lets say if i am booking ticket now for sept. journey, i am good to add extra baggage now. Please correct me if my understanding is wrong.

    Thanks

I wish to carry excess weight of 30 kg which would be beyond the limit indigo allow and excess will include TV as well as microwave can you please let me know how much I have to pay for the extra items I am carrying and once this stuff reach in Dubai do I have to pay any money to Dubai airport authority for any kind of clearance.

      Posted on May 26, 2015

TV special handling charges will depend on whether it is more than 39 inches of width or not. If it is more than 39 inches then Rs 2000 have to be paid for TV. Similarly, Rs 2000 will have to be paid for microwave as well.
But, total excess weight will have to be paid for either at the check in counter of airport @ 525 per kg for total excess or it can be pre-booked under 10 kg slab for international flight to Dubai and the rest 20 can be paid @ 525 per kg.

sir i am regular flyer using indigo flights. i was charged rs.10000 for a extra baggage of 40kgs dt:03/05/2015 on passenger pnr qy5ttg carrier 6e319 i am was shocked while paying the charges whereas i had confirmed from your website reading the very previous page that i will be charged rs.3750
such an inapproriate working is not fair in my opinion kindly give me a satisfactory explaination of the above mentioned matter

    • admin

      Posted on May 8, 2015

This is really very sad. We wish that you could have asked this question before the commencement of your travel. Rs 3750 is charged for excess baggage upto 30 kgs only when you pre-pay for it at the time of making the booking or at least 6 hours before scheduled departure of flights. In your case, you have not done this, meaning that you have been charged on per kg basis @ Rs 250 for 40 kgs of excess baggage.
We answer many of these queries on daily basis and wish that you had asked about it before flying. In your case, 30 kgs of excess baggage would have been bought at Rs 3750 and rest of 10 kgs would have been charged @ Rs 250. Total payable sum would have been= Rs 6250.
In order to bring more clarity after your case, we are also amending relevant sections of website so that there is more clarity and people do not lose money which they can save.

For domestic flights of India, you can pre-book excess baggage up to 30 kgs by paying Rs 3750. This pre-booking can be done in two ways: by their website or by calling their call centre numbers at least 6 hours before scheduled departure of flight. For the other 20 kgs which remains, you will have to pay at rate of Rs 250 per kg (=Rs 5000) at the time of check in.

We are traveling from Chennai to Coimbatore on Mar 7th (0630) flight. Since we are coming from USA, our check in luggage is 60 kg (2 person). I read about the 30 kg prepaid baggageNEW (RS 3000), should I apply online, if so when can I apply for that ?

      Posted on March 3, 2015

The rates have been revised now and we will soon be updating information on our website as well. The rate for 30 kg pre-paid excess baggage for domestic flights now stands at Rs 3750 (or, USD 65, if you decide to make payment in USDs). You can pre-pay for it 6 hours prior to the departure of flight. And, this can be done both while booking on website of Indigo or through its call center.
