Low air fares do attract critics who wonder why such fares are announced by airlines when these are reeling under the pressure of big losses. But, there is not just a bad angle to lowest tickets wars. The price wars which the Indian aviation industry has witnessed in 2014, chiefly due to policies of low cost carriers like Spicejet has had at least one very positive impact. It has shaken the Indian passengers out of their beds and made them fly on these low fares in month of September, a low-season month, beating the records of last year.

Indian aviation ministry has outlined that due this stimulation given by the low prices, the market of aviation has seen passenger growth of 27.83% as compared with September 2013. This is a massive jump as it signifies that in September 2014, 58.22 lakh passengers flew as compared with 45.55 lakhs in September 2013.

On year to year basis, there was growth of 7.55% from Jan-Sept 2013 to Jan-Sept 2014 figures. The data also shows that IndiGo still is a market leader with 32.8% share and is followed by Spicejet at 18.6% and Jet Airways at 16.7%.
