March 4, 2023
Airlines have their policies for carrying children and, in particular, the unaccompanied minors. Here is a comparison of policies of the major US carriers.
Age of Children | Airline and its policy |
Less than 5 years old | No airline permits them to fly alone |
5-11 years | UMNR service needed for Southwest and United Airlines |
5-12 years | UMNR service needed for Alaska Airline |
5-14 years | UMNR service needed for American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Spirit, US Airways and Virgin America. |
These airlines also have different unaccompanied minor fees for their services. This is provided below:
Airlines | UNMR Fees |
Alaska | $25 each way and$50 for connecting flights |
Southwest | $50 each way |
Frontier, JetBlue, Spirit | $100 each way |
American, Delta, United and US Airways | $150 each way |
Virgin America | Tiered System- $75 each way for flights of less than 2 hours, $100 for >2hrs, $125 for flights to/from Mexico |
If you have the minors travelling with you, it would be in the fitness of things to plan your travel so that you can effect savings on minor fees charged. At least, you shall know what the airline policies and fees are for unaccompanied minors.
